Have Dental Floss, Will Travel

Mapping the world, one waxy strand at a time…

About Me

By day, I’m a thirty-year-old newly-minted history professor, navigating my way through the world of academia.  By night, I’m an aspiring adventurer with a healthy dose of wanderlust.

A retired competitive swimmer with far too much energy for my own good, I started running in January 2006 when I signed up with Team in Training to train for the Mayor’s Midnight Sun Marathon in Anchorage, Alaska.

That same month, I began dating the boy of my dreams, a world-traveling SCUBA instructor-turned-high school teacher who grew up in the back woods of Western Massachusetts.  By October, we were engaged.

Brent and I got married the following May, spent a month backpacking through Italy that summer, and began to settle into a life together.  I finished law school, passed the bar exam, and continued working toward my PhD; he cut his teeth as a history teacher; and we both fell further and further in love with the world of endurance sports.

I made my way from marathoning to triathlon-ing; Brent threw himself into adventure racing.  By the end of 2007, we had our first experience racing together.

In the summer of 2008, after a year of checking things off lists, a good friend convinced me to take a couple months off from dissertating, and I convinced Brent that we should head off on a six-week road trip (it didn’t take too much convincing).

We spent the next month and a half biking, hiking, and playing our way through New England and southeastern Canada.  I gave my brain a break, trained for an Ironman, and reclaimed my creative voice after too many legal arguments and academic analyses.

This blog sprung out of that trip (though the name came from our Italian honeymoon).

Over the past couple years, it’s turned into a mix of race reports, travelogues, and general ramblings of a life filled with two dogs, a big community of friends and family, lots of papers to grade, and a little bit of adventure thrown into the mix.

At first I thought that in order to sustain a blog, I’d have to keep it focused on one particular thing.  But then I realized – I’ve never been very good at that.

So instead, I’m writing here with one goal in mind – to tell a good story.

Thanks for following along!

I can totally relate to not being able to stay on “one topic” in a blog. Not that this is necessary.

Great “About” page! Since I read some of the posts you had detailing the major events you have here, it was nice seeing it all come together!
