Have Dental Floss, Will Travel

Mapping the world, one waxy strand at a time…

A Glutton for Punishment

Between racing in South Carolina last weekend and trying to cram five days of work into the past 2.5 days, I haven’t had much of a chance to think about the next adventure.
I graded papers, prepped classes, visited archives, and about half an hour before it was time to leave this afternoon, I threw everything that I might possibly need into a bag, planning to sort through it once we arrived at our destination.

But now, sitting in a hotel room in Charlottesville, VA, I’ve finally begun to contemplate tomorrow’s challenge: in about 8 hours, Bess and I will be dipping our toes into the 50k waters, tackling 6,300 feet of quad-groaning elevation gain.
Perhaps it’s not the worst thing in the world that I haven’t had the opportunity to dwell on this race. With a frantic winter filled with snowstorms, dissertation drama, and job interviews, outside training has been inconsistent, and I have no real sense of what the day will hold.
After last weekend’s outing, though, I’m looking forward to getting out on the trails, and strangely excited for the chance to push through the pain.
But maybe not too too much pain…
