Have Dental Floss, Will Travel

Mapping the world, one waxy strand at a time…

To bed, I said!

It’s 10:00 on Sunday night.  The race has been over for 12 hours.  GOALS ARA has been finished for 10 hours.

How does that work, you ask?
In short, navigational blunders, alternate trail systems, and newly plowed logging roads.
I’ll let Brent and Jon explain it in their race reports.  Suffice it to say, third place was theirs for the taking.  Until it wasn’t.
In the end, two FOG’s – NYARA and Berlin/EMS – tied for third place and both earned a spot at the 2009 World AR Championships in Portugal.  I got a phone call from the team’s satellite phone at 10:15 AM.  Brent said they were somewhere in the woods but couldn’t pinpoint their exact location.  Then the connection lapsed.  An hour later, we finally got back in touch with them, and learned that they’d made their way down to Dummer’s Pond, a checkpoint from the second night of the race – 30+ miles from the finish line.   Margaret, Sue, Finn, and I went to pick them up, with pizza, pie, and vitamin water in tow.
So, a bit of a disappointing finish to a pretty amazing few days.  Jon, Tracey, Bruce, and Brent raced hard.  They looked strong.  They proved (again) that they could compete on the international scene.  They ran, biked, paddled, and navigated their way through close to 275 miles of northern New England.  On less than an hour sleep.
I, for one, couldn’t be more proud of them.
Thanks to all who sent trail mail and well wishes to the gang – they loved hearing from you!
Some final thoughts on the race tomorrow, along with a play-by-play of the sleep monsters Brent saw in his french onion soup at dinner tonight.
For now, Brent and I are holed up in a cabin in Holderness, New Hampshire, on the banks of Little Squam Lake.  I’m watching The Parent Trap (of the Lindsay Lohan variety), and Brent is catching up on the race blog.  It’s time for bed.

Amazing. And do I understand this correctly – 10 hours afterwards he still isn't sleeping? That's just unreal.
