The Holiday Bootie Buster Challenge

Not being able to run the past few weeks has been wreaking a bit of havoc on my psyche. I’m still keeping active with biking and elliptical-ing, but it’s just not the same as pounding some hard miles on Forbidden Drive or catching up with friends on the Kelly Drive loop.

I’m making progress on the injury front – had a bone scan last week and an appointment scheduled with a new specialist for Wednesday – but I’ve never been great with patience and this nagging pain is getting old fast.

Last week, though, I found a fun distraction and an antidote to the monotony of gym time. I’ve recently begun to become acquainted with a community of running bloggers (thanks, mostly, to my friend and running partner Natalie). One of these runners, known to me only as Run to Finish, has organized the Holiday Bootie Buster Challenge.

From December 8th through January 4th, nearly 100 athletes will log their workouts, tallying their totals of miles and minutes of whatever form of exercise in which they partake (I learned that snow-shoeing is to be logged by mile, rather than by minute). Points are awarded in various increments, and in the end, prizes are awarded to the top finishers.

I was telling Brent about it the other day and he decided to participate as well, so we’ll have our own little intra-household competition (it remains to be seen how healthy this will be for our marriage).

I certainly don’t think of myself as a gym rat, but it seems like it’ll be a fun way to stay motivated and pass the miles until I can run again.

Let the challenge begin!

I think Brent can decide whether rock climbing is cardio or weights, I would say it probably falls in either pretty easily.

That sounds like fun with both of you doing it. I am bummed out just that I can’t sweat and have a hard workout right now. This will keep me sidetracked and motivated at least for the next month, which I’m excited about. My runs mostly just suck. I don’t think I’m really running, I just stop and stand on the treadmill very often. I should track how long I can actually run at a time without stopping. February be here already!!

Good luck in the challenge! I hope it will keep you motivated in the gym until you can get back to running!
